Salmon fishing can be a lot of fun. If you are salmon fishing for the first time, you want to make sure that you are as successful as possible. There are some things that you can do that will help you come home with some salmon you can eat.

The Right Bait

You aren't going to attract any salmon if you don't give them the right bait. Salmon prefer to have live bait, which doesn't always mean an actual live fish. Live bait basically means anything that is or was living. Some of the live baits that salmon like include fish eggs and pieces of herring. If you can't find herring, a piece of smelt will work as well. If you don't want to use live bait, you can try using a lure that imitates the way that fish move, which might attract a salmon.

Make it Sparkle

Salmon like shiny, sparkly, flashing things too. Fish scales often reflect the light a bit, so when they move, there is a flash, which lets predators like salmon catch them. No matter what kind of bait you have on your hook, you can add something shiny to your hook to attract salmon. There are several attachments that you can use, and you can generally find them at the same place you got your fishing pole or where you get your bait.

Red Line

You want your bait to look like it's something occurring naturally in the water so that salmon are more likely to strike at it. One way to do this is to use a red fishing line. Colors start to disappear in the water, and red is the first color to disappear. So, if you use a red line on your fishing rod, the line will be less visible the further down it goes, which can help trick the fish that you are looking for. However, before you do this, make sure that you know what species you are fishing for, since the sockeye salmon can actually see the color red. If you are going after them, you may want to stay with the fishing line you already have.

If you are going to go fishing for salmon, you want to be able to come home with a successful catch. There are several tips you can use that will help you have a good trip and catch the fish that you are looking for.
